Happy 80th Birthday Grandma!

Today is my grandma’s 80th birthday.  She’s one of the coolest people I know.  She bought me my first bra.  She bought me my first razor.  She’s taken me gambling. Whenever we have family get togethers, she’s always the on who offers me a glass of wine.  And then tells me to go take more when I’ve finished it.  She’s a really fun person, and proof that age is just a number.

Few people can say that their grandma is their drinking buddy.  Or that they’re excited to go hang out with their grandma.  Or that they went to Vegas with their grandma.  Or that they saw male strippers in Vegas with their grandma.  But I can.  And for that, I consider myself lucky.

My grandma doesn’t have a computer.  But she has an iPad.  Cause she’s cool like that.  Although I think she mostly uses it to play slot machine games.  So she’ll probably never read this post.  But I’m going to wish her happy birthday on here anyway, and let the rest of you know how cool she is.

Free birthday pasta at Boston Pizza

Two days after my birthday, I decided to use my Boston Pizza birthday deal.  If you sign up for the Boston Pizza email club, you get a coupon for either a free pasta or a free dessert.  Since the pastas cost more than the desserts, it seemed only logical to redeem the coupon for a free pasta.

I met my friends at the Boston Pizza on Broadway after work.  Unlike the Red Robin on Broadway, the Boston Pizza does still exist.  I’m glad I avoided having two fails in a row.  That would have been embarrassing.

I chose spaghetti and meatballs for my dinner.  Simple, yet delicious.  And it came with garlic bread.  The portions are huge, so I still had some leftover as well.  And it’s very rare for me to have any leftovers.

Stella Artois happened to be on special that day.  When I went to Red Robin, I didn’t get asked for my ID.  I was surprised, since I get ID’d everywhere.  I thought maybe now that I was 24, that was it.  But I was mistaken.  I got ID’d at Boston Pizza.  I’m pretty sure my waiter was younger than me too.  Oh well.  He brought me my beer and that’s all that matters.

When you sign up for the Boston Pizza newsletter, not only do they send you a coupon on your birthday, you also get a coupon for a free starter, just for signing up.  I didn’t want to use two coupons in one day.  I’m not sure if you’re allowed.  So the following week, I went to the Boston Pizza on No. 3 Road in Richmond and got my free Boston Pizza bread with bolognese dip.

There was no Stella on special that day, so I opted for a cocktail.  I don’t remember what it was exactly.  It was sweet.  And I loved how it came with a gummy worm.  That’s true class and maturity right there.

The Boston Pizza deal is pretty awesome, since you get an entire pasta and they give you over a week to redeem it.  And the starter is a nice bonus.  The only way it could be better is if they offered free birthday drinks as well.  But that’s probably asking for too much.  I’m more than happy with free pasta and bread.  I love my carbs.

Free birthday burger at Red Robin

The day after my birthday, I decided to continue the use of my free birthday deals.  I knew I wanted to get my free birthday burger at Red Robin.  To do this, you have to sign up for their eclub newsletter.  They should send you a coupon for a free birthday burger seven days before your birthday and it will expire seven days after your birthday.  I like that they give you time to make proper use of it.  But I was eager to redeem it as soon as possible, because I love Red Robin burgers.

I was supposed to meet my friend after work at the Broadway location, because that was the most convenient.  This turned out to be a major fail.  When I got there, I noticed it looked dark inside.  And then I went up to the door and saw that the location had closed down.  I was very upset that this happened without me knowing.

So upsetting

But nothing was going to get in the way of me and my Red Robin burger, so we downtown instead.  The most expensive burger on the menu is the Mediterranean lamb burger.  So naturally, that’s what I got.  And of course I ate all my fries and ordered more, since they’re endless.

My friend bought me a couple drinks as well.  Beer and a burger is always a good combo.  Especially when it’s a giant glass of beer.

But if you want something sweet and boozy, the flat on your beak drink is really good.  I can’t remember what was in it.  I just remember that I liked it.  It looks really girly but it wasn’t weak like a lot of them are.  I give it my approval.

I love the Red Robin birthday burger deal because they give you ample time to use your coupon and there are many options to choose from.  You can sign up for the eclub online or at the restaurant itself when you visit.  Just make sure the location you decide to go to does indeed still exist.

Happy Birthday Mom!

It’s my mom’s birthday today.  So I thought I should acknowledge that in a blog post.  I know she won’t read it since she hardly ever uses the computer, but that doesn’t matter.  It’ll be like acknowledging her birthday in secret.  Except not because a bunch of other people will read it.  But whatever.  I’ve started the post already so it’s going to exist.

I would like to say that my mom is my role model.  But I don’t want five kids.  Yeah, she had five.  I’m the oldest.  And that’s pretty much what put me off of having any.  I remember her saying she had me first so I could be a built in babysitter.  How nice of her.

So the desire to have many children is not something that I share with my mother.  But we do share other things.  I think I got my love for writing from her.  I don’t think I’m as good a writer as she is.  But I’m obnoxious enough to write publicly as opposed to privately.  She’s written several things that she hasn’t done anything with.  She told me that in her will she would leave me all her writings for me to do something with.  What the hell she expects me to do with them, I have no idea.  But maybe I could always start a new blog called “Stuff my mom wrote”.  It would probably be a whole lot more interesting than this one.

My mom and I a couple years ago in front of a bear statue. One of my dad’s old classmates had this art exhibit out in Langley so we attended. I’m not really into art. But there was free wine and cheese, which my mom and I both appreciated.  We both love purple as well, probably because we look so good in it.

Happy birthday mom!  Thanks for all your love and support and words of wisdom!

Free birthday slurpee at 7-Eleven

After having dinner at Pajo’s, I needed to make a stop at 7-Eleven to buy a bus pass for the month of August.  It’s kind of depressing having to spend $110 on your birthday, but that’s what happens when it’s on the very last day of the month.

I went in and asked the clerk for a two zone monthly bus pass for August.  He then informed me that they had sold out for the day.  I was confused.  How do they sell out of August bus passes before August even arrives?  Then he said they had some in a locked box that only the manager could open and that the manager wasn’t there.  He told me they would be available if I came back the following morning.  Except the following morning, it would be August, hence I would require the use of the bus pass to get there.  Fail.

Before I left, I told him that I’d read online that you get a free slurpee on the day of your birthday.  He thought I was talking about the free slurpee day on July 11th and said that it had already happened.  So I clarified and he said “Oh, it’s your birthday?”  I’m not sure if he completely understood me, but he said I could go get a slurpee.  Which I did.  I asked if he wanted to see ID but he said it was fine.  So I got a free white out monutain dew slurpee.

I’m not sure if I was supposed to get it or not, or if he just let me take it because of the lack of bus passes along with the lack of understanding me.  But I have read online that free birthday slurpees really are a thing.  I guess it just helps if they disappoint you in some way by not having the thing you originally came in for.  I didn’t really even want it that much, so I just had a bit and gave the rest to my brother.  Because I’m a nice person.

As for the bus pass, I went to a different 7-Eleven a couple blocks away, where they still had them in stock.  I probably could have tried to get another free slurpee from this location as well, but I didn’t want to be greedy.  One free birthday slurpee is plenty enough.

Free birthday meal at Pajo’s

On my birthday, I knew I wanted to get a free meal for dinner.  Some deals allow you to get your free meal one week before or one week after your birthday, while others only allow you to get it on the actual day.  It only made sense to go for one that would only be valid on the day of my birthday.  I had two choices.  Denny’s or Pajo’s.  I had gotten my free birthday meal at Denny’s last year, so I decided to opt for Pajo’s this time.  I wanted to go with my family, and I figured they’d be happier with fish and chips.  I suppose I could have attempted to do both, but I feel that would have been overkill.

My Pajo’s birthday coupon

In order to get your free birthday meal at Pajo’s, just go to their website and click on “Free Birthday Meal” under the heading “About”.  This will bring you to a form you need to fill out with your name, email address, and birthday.  Then you’ll receive a link to the coupon in your email.  Just print it out, fill it in with your name, and take it to Pajo’s with your picture ID on the day of your birthday.  It’s good for a small fish and chips and a drink, or a burger with fries and a drink.

Dinner at Pajo’s with my family

There are two Pajo’s locations in Richmond, one at Steveston on the wharf, and one at Garry Point Park.  We figured the wharf might be busier, so we went to Garry Point.  It was a nice day outside and we were able to find a picnic table to sit at.  I had my coupon printed and filled out and ready to go.  Halibut is more expensive than cod or salmon, so naturally I chose that option since it was free.  But I had a bit of salmon too that my family had left over.  Because I can always eat.  The portions at Pajo’s are pretty big.  You get a lot of fries in your basket.

free pajo's

My free birthday fish and chips

I don’t have fish and chips that often, so I’m glad I decided to go there.  There are two other Pajo’s locations at Rocky Point Park in Port Moody and Gates Park in Port Coquitlam.  I’m lucky that my birthday is in the summer, because their summer hours are 11am-8pm, whereas in the spring and fall they’re only open until 7pm, and only on certain days of the week.  This gave me ample time to get there and redeem my coupon after work.  Unfortunately, since they operate outdoors, Pajo’s is closed during the winter.  So you if you have a winter birthday, I guess you’re out of luck.  I wonder if Pajo’s offers any deal for those who miss out by being born at the wrong time.  Maybe it’s worth checking?  But this is just one of the reasons why summer birthdays rock.

Free birthday drink from Blenz

Most people know that you can get a free drink on your birthday from Starbucks if you register your card online.  But did you know that you can also get a free drink on your birthday from Blenz?  It’s not as good as the Starbucks deal, but it’s still something.  And there’s no card registration required.  All you need to show for this deal is your ID.

I went to the Blenz in the village at UBC on my lunch break on my birthday.  And I told the barista that I’d read about the deal and asked what exactly I could get.  They only let you choose between a coffee or an Americano, but I managed to get a mango rooibos tea instead.  They don’t do cold drinks for this deal, which is unfortunate if your birthday is in the middle of the summer.  But the tea was still refreshing.  I wonder if other locations allow you to get a cold drink instead or something fancier than just coffee.  I might look into this next year.

You might want to check in advance with your local Blenz as to whether they honour this deal or not, because apparently not every location will.  And it’s only valid on the day of your birthday.  But free is free.  So why not get yourself a drink?
