I don’t always take pictures of my food, but when I do, I post them on Facebook

Don’t you just hate those people who take pictures of their food?  It’s so unnecessary, right?  I mean the food is there for you to eat, not to look at.  I used to judge those people.  And lo and behold, I became one of them.  I don’t always take pictures of my food.  But when I do, I post them on Facebook.  I’m not one of those people who has to instagram every single thing she eats.  I don’t even have instagram actually.  Which is probably for the best.

If I’m eating something bland or unexciting, then I see no reason to have to share it with the world.  But when it’s some sort of unique concoction that I know people would either be jealous of or judge me for eating, then I feel it’s somehow justified.  So I just wanted to share with you the fact that I had a pizza burger the other night.  I love when you can get two things in one like that.  The pizza burger is the newest addition to the Boston Pizza menu.  I opted for the pepperoni and bacon one.  Because why wouldn’t you want the extra meat?

I used to be one of those people who always felt compelled to finish everything off their plate.  But on occasion I now find myself bringing home leftovers.  In this case, it’s understandable, because the pizza burger was pretty much like eating a pizza and a burger.  So really it was two meals in one.  Literally, because I ate the rest of it for lunch the following day.

Did you know that Boston Pizza actually puts instructions on their take home boxes as to what to do with your leftover food?  They tell you how long you have before you have to refrigerate it, how to store it, how to reheat it, and how many days you have left before you have to eat it.  And so I put it in the fridge when I got home, as it says to do so within two hours.  When I entered the kitchen, my dad looked at me, saw that I was wearing my boots and my jacket, and said, “Where are you going??” because it was late.  I then informed him that I’d just gotten home.  Apparently he didn’t realize I wasn’t in the house up until that moment.

Thanks for telling me what to do with my leftover food. I wouldn’t have known otherwise.

I also abided by the instruction of eating the food within one to two days.  Obviously.  Why would I leave it for three days?  I don’t have that kind of willpower.  I didn’t bother to divide my food.  It wasn’t a large amount.  And I completely ignored the reheating instructions.  I ate that pizza burger cold.  Because I’m a rebel like that.

Two days after my birthday, I decided to use my Boston Pizza birthday deal.  If you sign up for the Boston Pizza email club, you get a coupon for either a free pasta or a free dessert.  Since the pastas cost more than the desserts, it seemed only logical to redeem the coupon for a free pasta.

I met my friends at the Boston Pizza on Broadway after work.  Unlike the Red Robin on Broadway, the Boston Pizza does still exist.  I’m glad I avoided having two fails in a row.  That would have been embarrassing.

I chose spaghetti and meatballs for my dinner.  Simple, yet delicious.  And it came with garlic bread.  The portions are huge, so I still had some leftover as well.  And it’s very rare for me to have any leftovers.

Stella Artois happened to be on special that day.  When I went to Red Robin, I didn’t get asked for my ID.  I was surprised, since I get ID’d everywhere.  I thought maybe now that I was 24, that was it.  But I was mistaken.  I got ID’d at Boston Pizza.  I’m pretty sure my waiter was younger than me too.  Oh well.  He brought me my beer and that’s all that matters.

When you sign up for the Boston Pizza newsletter, not only do they send you a coupon on your birthday, you also get a coupon for a free starter, just for signing up.  I didn’t want to use two coupons in one day.  I’m not sure if you’re allowed.  So the following week, I went to the Boston Pizza on No. 3 Road in Richmond and got my free Boston Pizza bread with bolognese dip.

There was no Stella on special that day, so I opted for a cocktail.  I don’t remember what it was exactly.  It was sweet.  And I loved how it came with a gummy worm.  That’s true class and maturity right there.

The Boston Pizza deal is pretty awesome, since you get an entire pasta and they give you over a week to redeem it.  And the starter is a nice bonus.  The only way it could be better is if they offered free birthday drinks as well.  But that’s probably asking for too much.  I’m more than happy with free pasta and bread.  I love my carbs.

The day after my birthday, I decided to continue the use of my free birthday deals.  I knew I wanted to get my free birthday burger at Red Robin.  To do this, you have to sign up for their eclub newsletter.  They should send you a coupon for a free birthday burger seven days before your birthday and it will expire seven days after your birthday.  I like that they give you time to make proper use of it.  But I was eager to redeem it as soon as possible, because I love Red Robin burgers.

I was supposed to meet my friend after work at the Broadway location, because that was the most convenient.  This turned out to be a major fail.  When I got there, I noticed it looked dark inside.  And then I went up to the door and saw that the location had closed down.  I was very upset that this happened without me knowing.

But nothing was going to get in the way of me and my Red Robin burger, so we downtown instead.  The most expensive burger on the menu is the Mediterranean lamb burger.  So naturally, that’s what I got.  And of course I ate all my fries and ordered more, since they’re endless.

My friend bought me a couple drinks as well.  Beer and a burger is always a good combo.  Especially when it’s a giant glass of beer.



But if you want something sweet and boozy, the flat on your beak drink is really good.  I can’t remember what was in it.  I just remember that I liked it.  It looks really girly but it wasn’t weak like a lot of them are.  I give it my approval.

I love the Red Robin birthday burger deal because they give you ample time to use your coupon and there are many options to choose from.  You can sign up for the eclub online or at the restaurant itself when you visit.  Just make sure the location you decide to go to does indeed still exist.


My dream job

A few weeks ago when I came home, my mom tossed the Richmond Review newspaper to me and said “Here’s a job for you”.  I didn’t know what it was.  I thought maybe it would be some sort of joke thing, you never know with my mom.  But this is the article that she was referring to.

Of course I was intrigued, read the whole article and looked it up online and checked all the qualifications and instructions and deadline for submissions.  Tourism Richmond is hiring a food blogger to eat at various restaurants around Richmond and blog about it.  This is pretty much my dream job.  The only thing better would be if someone would pay me to blog about watching TV or riding public transit.

When I went to the online ad, it said they were looking for someone who was passionate about food and was constantly on Facebook and Twitter.  If those were the only requirements, I’d be a shoo-in for this.  But it looks like they might prefer candidates who already have their own established food blogs.  While my blog here isn’t solely dedicated to food, it seems like food is a topic that seems to come up pretty often.  I am passionate about food and it is one of my most popular blogging topics.

I update my Facebook and Twitter several times a day.  And everyday there is at least one status about food, usually more.  Either about food that I’ve bought, seen, eaten, or want to eat.  Or something witty about the various national food days.  For example, today happens to be National French Bread Day.  How do I know that?  I make it a point to keep up with all the national food holidays throughout the year.  My friend asked me if I have a food calendar.  I do not, but I would like one.  Do those exist?  If not, can I start making them?  I mean a calendar that lists the national food days, not a calendar made of food.  Although that sounds even more amazing.

I haven’t applied for this job yet.  They give you all of March to do so.  I don’t want to rush it.  From what I’ve seen, there’s A LOT of competition.  And a lot of them are total foodies who have well established food blogs and lots of followers and experience.  Experience with what?  I don’t know, writing?  Eating?  But I think I have a lot of experience writing and eating as well.  And I have a lot of experience living in Richmond, so I know areas and restaurants and history.

When thinking about applying, this is what I came up with for the reasons I should be the food blogger for Tourism Richmond.

1) I eat food.

2) I’m a blogger.

3) I live in Richmond.

You can’t argue with that logic, right?  Although some would say it’s a bit of a weak arguement, I suppose.  But it’s true.  Then again, a lot of people can probably relate to items 1-3.  I guess I shall have to come up with more than that.  What about the fact that I really want it and it’s my dream job?  No?  Not good enough?  Fine.  I’ll think of something better.

The perks of this job are insane.  I had to read it several times in order to believe that this was an actual position.  They pay $50,000 for a year of work.  They pay you to eat out at restaurants.  They provide you with housing.  They give you a gym membership to help you work off the calories from eating out everyday.  What more could you ask for?

Of course with an insane job, there will be insane competition.  If you check Facebook or Twitter or just Google 365 Days of Dining, you’ll see how much hype and interest there is in this.  Obviously.  But I won’t let that discourage me.  I’ll accept it as a challenge.  One thing they want is someone who’s “open-minded and willing to try new things”.  There’s a lot of food that I’ve tried, and a lot that I haven’t tried.  And I think that’s a good thing, because it would give a new perspective for some things.

I love blogging and I love food and it would be so great to be able to combine the two and get paid for it.  I wish there wasn’t only the one position.  But alas, that’s the way it is.  And whether or not I qualify for this, I will continue to blog about food and I will continue to constantly overuse Facebook and Twitter.  It would just be a whole lot better if I was getting paid to do so.



Hot water costs 25 cents

I’ve been avoiding fast food lately.  A friend of mine gave it up for Lent and that made me think about how often I opt for fast food choices myself.  I’m not cutting it out entirely, but I think it would be healthier for me in general if I were to consume less of it.  Today, however, I went to McDonald’s.  Why?  Because my grandma, of all people, wanted to go. Why?  Because she had coupons.  You can’t argue with that logic.

We went to the one on No. 2 & Blundell in Richmond.  I’m not a big fan of this location.  Yes, I do consider myself to be somewhat of an expert regarding the various McDonald’s locations that exist in my area and the surrounding areas in which I travel.  I can’t remember why I didn’t like it but I think I had a bad experience there in the past.  I think the bathroom was dirty and the service was bad.

Anyway, the service was alright this time.  Except for one thing.  I went and ordered my McChicken sandwiches, fries, and drinks (no, they weren’t all for me, my brother and sister were there as well).  And I asked if I could also get a small cup of hot water.  My grandma also wanted hot water because that’s what she drinks.  It was bad enough that she was in a McDonald’s where they’ve apparently discontinued the grilled chicken sandwich that they used to have there and she used to order in the past.  She had to opt for one of their new bistro sandwiches, while eliminating the sauce, tomatoes, and ingredients that she cannot have in her diet.  Then again, she was the one who wanted to go there.

As for the water, I apparently could not have a small cup of hot water as I had so nicely asked for.  Apparently, hot water costs 25 cents.  Even if you’ve already bought stuff.  If I spend over $10 at McDonald’s, the least they could do is give me a small cup of hot water for free.  Hell, if I buy one item off the $1.39 menu, I expect that they’d let me have free water.  In other McDonald’s locations I’ve been to, they don’t charge you for water if you’ve bought something.  Even if you go to Starbucks or Tim Hortons, you can get hot water if you buy something.  So why does McDonald’s suddenly think that they’re water is such a precious commodity all of a sudden?

I don’t understand what the 25 cents is for.  Are they charging you for the cup?  No, because they’re more than willing to give you a cup to go get cold water.  And they’re willing to give you cold water for free.  So I guess they’re charging you for having boiled it?  The process of boiling it deserves a fee I guess?  But they boil water anyway, to make tea for the customers who order tea.  And those people aren’t being charged for the hot water, they’re being charged for the tea bag.  I guess it’s pretty much just a way for them to make a bit of an extra profit.  But I doubt that many people are asking for hot water.

I’d already paid, and I didn’t want to have to take out my Visa to pay for hot water.  Also I didn’t think I should have to.  So I asked for a cold water instead.  Which you do not have to pay for.  Usually they just give you tap water or something.  But here, they give you a small cup, so you can go fill it with water yourself where you fill your cups at the pop machines.  But there’s nothing to stop you from filling that cup meant for water with pop instead.  I find it interesting how they’re so overprotective of their hot water, but there are no regulations whatsoever put on their soft drinks.  Way to go, McDonald’s, way to go.
